The holiday season in 2021 is going to be a benchmark year for retailers and brands with Black Friday kicking off holiday spending. With the vaccine rollout, restrictions have been lifting nationwide and retailers have been able to resume in-store shopping. Brands are looking back to 2019 data in anticipation for 2021 tactics since 2020 trends were skewed by the pandemic.
In 2019, 87% of consumers planned to do Black Friday shopping in-store with consumers planning to increase spending for the season (Deloitte, 2019). These consumer behaviors were severely impacted in 2020. For the first time in Black Friday history, most consumers planned to shop online instead of in-store. CNBC reported a record 21.6% increase in online consumer spending in 2020, reaching $9 billion (Thomas, 2020). With restrictions in place due to the pandemic, retailers that had embraced an omnichannel strategy were better able to support this shift, particularly eCommerce platforms with an intuitive, user-friendly experience.
